Academic Development Block (ADB)

Academic Development Block is a three month block that gives senior residents a chance to explore an area of interest in depth. It's one of the best times of senior year and is truly one of the most unique parts about the BCRP.

Rotation Directors: Andy Fine, Lise Nigrovic, Colin Sox

ADB PROJECT

  • Every ADB senior is expected to work on a project during ADB. Three months is not a lot of time, so we recommend that you start thinking about your project well in advance of starting ADB. The most successful ADB projects are ones that have been set up prior to the beginning of the block so that you can hit the ground running.

  • Please click here for past ADB projects in AY ‘20-’21, AY ‘21-’22, and AY ‘22-’23 if you need inspiration. If you would like help finding a project mentor or thinking of project ideas, please get in touch with the chief in charge of ADB or the ADB rotation directors.

REQUIRED LECTURES

Please click on these links for previous presentations on Intro to ADB, Patient Safety, Presenting Your Work, Stats 101, and Negotiating for an Academic Position!

  • The ADB lectures are condensed into 4 half days, usually the second week of ADB. In response to feedback from prior residents, we have revised the lecture curriculum as well to provide you with the most engaging and essential tools for your career and professional development. We welcome feedback as we continue to try to make this rotation what you want it to be!

  • These lectures are mandatory, and we send the lecture dates well in advance of ADB so that you can make sure to keep your schedule open during those days. (We understand that you may occasionally miss these sessions due to being post-call.)  In the past, we have had difficulty with lecture attendance which has been frustrating for faculty who have volunteered their time and energy.

  • There is a Works in Progress session half-way through the block and a final presentation near the end. It is very important for you to present your work, and we expect everyone to be present at both of these sessions.

  • If you cannot make any of the above sessions, you MUST email the ADB directors (Colin Sox, Chris Landrigan, Lise Nigrovic, and Arvin Garg) and the chief in charge of ADB so we can find another time to make up the session.

SENIOR ROUNDS

  • Every ADB senior is required to give at least 1 senior rounds during the block. We encourage you to sign up early so that you can start preparing.

  • Click here for tips on making your senior rounds. After each presentation, we will also make sure you get real time feedback from either one of us or one of the program leadership (Ted, Tom, Gary, etc.).

  • If you have questions on topic selection or format, or want to practice your senior rounds beforehand, please reach out to the chief in charge of ADB.

  • It is MANDATORY to attend Senior Rounds when your co-ADB seniors and the TEACH juniors are presenting.
