Global Health

Goal: To teach residents about health care in an under-resourced setting with a focus on improving their knowledge about major causes of global pediatric morbidity and mortality, improving clinical skills, and increasing residents’ understanding of how culture, ethics, policies and health systems can affect pediatric health.

Objectives: By the end of the rotation residents should be able to:

  • List common neonatal and pediatric diagnosis that presented at the clinical site they worked with and answer questions about the presentation, diagnostic studies, and management or treatment of each. Describe national or international guidelines incorporated into clinical care given at the site.

  • Identify some of the social, environmental, cultural and political factors which contribute to the presentation of those diagnoses.

  • Give examples of local, national and international efforts of injury or disease prevention and treatment, describe the major governmental and non-governmental organizations involved in those initiatives, and reflect on the effectiveness of those efforts.

  • Compare systems of care at the health center that was visited with resident’s home clinical and hospital systems. Identify examples of good practices or systems problems and potential solutions.

  • Discuss ethical dilemmas and/or cultural barriers that the resident and health care team encountered.

  • Describe the resident’s own participation in teaching, health advocacy, research or other health improvement projects at the site
